:- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Erika -- Chock-full of History : I was eager to read this because Brandy Colbert is one of my favorite authors. As soon as I started it, I felt a sense of hesitancy. I struggle with trauma-based history topics. Rehashing the abuse that my ancestors endured really troubles me. I was hoping that this book would put an emphasis on how affluent and successful Black Wall Street was before the massacre. I wanted to read about the glory days. While she did cover that, it wasn’t very in depth. I can appreciate that this book put into perspective just how horrific the massacre and aftermath were. I also enjoyed that she included so much history about indigenous people. It is clear that a lot of research and passion was poured into this project. Brandy Colbert’s BLACK BIRDS IN THE SKY examines what lead to the events of June 1st, what exactly happened that day, and why it’s been virtually kept out of history books since.
